The Orbital Data Vault is a massive three-story pyramid, an Omnitech facility used for data storage and other purposes. It originally drifted in orbit above Polyphn. Its exterior is a rotating pyramid crisscrossed with rail tracks for maintenance drones, reinforced docking ports, security nodes, and weaponized flying drones with glowing red eyes. The airlock is barely large enough for three or four people, and a half-android receptionist impaled on a rod performs voice-print analysis as the facility’s most common first line of security. A spinning corridor of rotating laser beams serves as a further security measure, leading to an inner data room with telescopic arms, monitors, and cables where Victor Saren confronted the intruders.
Years ago, Felix Champlin assembled a crew, his brother Petey Champlin, cat burglar Nyx Verhoeven, and gunslinger Jett Harlow, to break in (Ep 9 flashback). They discovered the truth: Omnitech had been digitizing prisoner consciousnesses and killing their bodies, and Petey’s consciousness had been extracted and trapped in the servers. The vault was “in migratory mode,” about to relocate, during the heist, which explained its unusually heavy security that night. Felix escaped but burned his identity in the process, and the vault was later relocated far from any known drill paths. Felix’s long-term goal has been to kill Victor Saren and rescue Petey’s digitized consciousness. Part of why he joined Dr. Voss’s mission was that the signal coordinates she was chasing were near the vault’s new location.
By the crew’s investigation of the Causeway 3 routing station, historical transit records confirmed that the Orbital Data Vault, with Petey aboard, had transited through Causeway 3 years earlier bound for Prometheon Station, and never returned (Ep 29).
