Mara Vex is a survivor of the maglev crash in Bloc 6 that killed her family, and a driven infiltrator hunting the truth behind who was responsible. Nexus Corp officers arrived at the crash site and killed survivors; Mara escaped and was reported dead, her credit accounts frozen. She spent the following year off-grid piecing together evidence of a cover-up, and discovered that Sallerist had faked his own death in the crash.
Lean and wary, with a calculating edge, Mara wears a heavily patched tactical jacket and keeps a photo of her family tucked inside it, along with her mother’s broken watch on her wrist. She’s quick to distrust and slow to open up. People either love her or want her dead, with little in between.
In Polyphn she allied with Thorne and the crew, backed by her bodyguard Brick and an old contact, the ripperdoc Dr. Sial, who had installed her cybernetic modifications: a telescopic ocular implant capable of zooming to 500 meters, and a “Ghost Talker” cochlear transceiver that let Sial see through her eyes and offer remote support.
Mara fought alongside the crew during the gravcar chase and the subsequent assault on The Relay Tower. While Thorne climbed the tower alone to retrieve the data cache, Mara stayed below with Brick and Kano to hold off a wave of Nexus goons. When Thorne came back down, he found Brick and Kano dead and Mara gone, along with the van that had carried off her attackers. He assumed Nexus had taken her to finish covering up the Bloc 6 crash, and that she was likely dead, but her fate was never directly confirmed on air after that.
