It serves as their legal identity in a sector dominated by corporations, giving them standing to make contracts and hold property, and to negotiate on equal footing with the megacorporations around them.

In Episode 21, Thorne used InterCorporate policy to argue that the crew were technically Laicar Research employees under a legally binding contract with Scapegoat Solutions LLC, forcing Viktor Strake to release them for 24 hours.
