Vera Corbin is a xenoarchaeologist, the last remaining employee of Laicar Research on Sibylen, and an old friend of Froggy from childhood. Excitable and driven, she was in her upper forties when the crew met her.
She was born on Wafisa and moved to Sibylen with her family as a teenager. She began working for Laicar Research young, which gave her access to the Exo-Net and let her reconnect with Froggy, contact that was later severed for twenty-five years after the Guardians shut the network down on Wafisa. Over the following decades she helped build Laicar Research and became a part owner, but by the time the crew arrived the company was down to about five employees and going bankrupt.
The crew met Vera in Episode 14 at Laicar’s research station on Sibylen, after Froggy (whom they had kept alive since he was shot in Episode 7) asked them to deliver her a message. It was an emotional reunion; she still calls him “Reginald.” Vera had discovered Exosite 34b, a buried alien quarantine facility, and had been excavating it for about eighteen months. She identified alien inscriptions in the facility as patterns associated with medical or healing structures, and saw the site’s upcoming auction as Laicar Research’s last chance at survival. She struck a contract with Thorne, giving Scapegoat Solutions LLC a cut of any auction discoveries in exchange for the crew’s help. When the exosite’s door activated for the first time, she marveled: “This might be the first example of alien technology actually activating. You have no idea what this means.”
In Episode 15, she helped the crew explore the deeper levels of the quarantine facility. Following the auction, Void Cultists attacked the exosite and captured Vera along with Meer Prust, Sally Gaylen, and a dozen or so others. In Episode 24, the crew found her already merged, along with Prust and Gaylen, into a single virtual intelligence housed in a silver orb via the alien device known as the Fork (the Paracausal Bifurcation Array). Her body did not survive the process. The crew has since referred to the resulting orb informally as “Vera,” and it remains locked away aboard The Scapegoat by Felix Champlin as of Episode 28.
