Sibylen is infamous across the sector for the sprawling ruins of an ancient alien species buried beneath its sands and cliffs, making it the most significant xenoarchaeological site in the sector. From space it appears as a dull gray ball streaked with black, naked and exposed with no cloud cover, with lines of cargo ships queuing in orbit to fuel. Despite appearing dead from orbit, the surface has birdsong, insects, and other life.
The planet orbits Shepherd, an F-type white dwarf, giving its skies a permanent amber hue. Atmosphere is thin but breathable, gravity is low-normal, and the terrain is vast bone-white desert, wind-scoured plateaus, and labyrinthine canyons. Population is under 500,000, almost entirely researchers and support staff. The ruins themselves are labyrinths of black stone etched with pulsating lines of silvery metal.
Before the alien discoveries, Sibylen functioned as essentially a planet-sized gas station, a fuel stop for long-haul truckers. The planet’s weak magnetosphere and thin atmosphere let stellar winds hammer the surface, embedding Helium-3 directly into the sand, so miners simply rake it from the dunes rather than scooping it from space. The port city, The Spigot, sits on one side of the planet; the He-3 strip mines are on the other, with huge conveyors cutting through dunes and miners in sealed suits fighting constant sandstorms. The alien dig sites, including The Gloam Trenches, sit on the far side from the port, where the original artifacts were found roughly seven years ago.
A massive fuel tower reaches from the surface to orbit, with ships queuing alongside it to refuel, and this is the source of the orbital queue visible from space. The General Store, an orbital station beside the queue, lets truckers place supply orders ahead of time for pickup during the fueling queue. Exo-Net access is normally free, but on Sibylen the corporations seized control of it and charge steep rates, so a free local-only exo site sprang up for the general population.
Surface locations include The Spigot, Exosite 34b (an alien quarantine building), The Gloam Trenches, and the He-3 mining fields. Laicar Research, led by Vera Corbin, maintains a presence here, and Void Cultists and multiple corporations, including Virodyne Labs and Novacrypt Solutions, have taken interest as well.
The crew arrived and met Vera Corbin, exploring the exosite (Ep 14). The Fork was activated (Ep 18), revealing a distant structure across space and alien entities that caused Haleyy to collapse. Viktor Strake later captured the crew, and an auction over the exosite was attacked by Void Cultists, during which three people were merged into a single orb through “the Joining” and Haleyy discovered a healing touch (Ep 21). The crew fled to The Spigot for repairs afterward (Ep 22).
